Well you have a STRESS Seminar coming up and the marketing is stressing you out! How to design a poster for marketing.Marketing is a subjective world with real objectives. One of the most difficult problems authors, lecturers, and churches face is good marketing materials. Now this article is not a course in graphic design or marketing, but I do what to give you some tips to help you in your quest for a good poster or flyer. This article is simply on poster design. For marketing tips see our articles under marketing. People are visual. There is no question about that. A good photo will catch the eye, but it is the information will cinch the sale. So your heading and subheadings need to give them a reason to read the rest. The most important part of your poster is your headline. You need to answer a question or solve a problem in that heading to keep them reading. Keep it as simple as possible. Below are two posters as an example. Please be patient for these to load, I needed to keep them fairly good quality so you could still read them.
Ok. Well first of all there are too many colors and too many fonts which make this very distracting. The eye doesn't know where to l0ok first and it is overall uninteresting. You need to choose a theme of colors that work well together, using a color wheel if necessary. Just two or three colors work well. Next, the heading is doesn't give the reader an answer to a problem. And the subheading is just plain repetitive.
Ahhhh, now the eye knows where to go. First the passerby on the street will see the headline at the top. Which tells them about a problem they might have that can be solved at this seminar. Then they will see Discover. Oh, that gets them to stop and read what they will discover (if they are interested in stress management of course). Most likely the next thing they will read is the red text with "SIX TWO-HOUR SESSIONS..." This tells them what they will be getting. And of course now if they are still interested they will probably read the rest of the poster. This poster also includes a testimony which is a VERY important selling feature. White space is often toted as important for a beautiful looking poster, and it does look more pleasant. But is your object for the poster to look nice or to get people interested in the program (or product). Don't leave out any selling features. Pictures rarely sell, words do. Pictures are there to simply catch the eye and enforce the message. Below are some more examples of flyers and posters that have been redone. You'll notice, it doesn't take much to make a dramatic improvement. BEFORE:
