Effort is Not Failure

Some have had a wrong view of effort and may not even realize it. I have had a wrong view of effort and didn’t realize it.  You see, I have associated effort with failure.  When effort is associated with failure the Christian walk can become legalistic and dim to say the least.  Let me give you a bigger picture, my thoughts went something like this:  If you have to put that much effort into something, obviously you are not good at it and thus a failure.  I mean if you have to try over and over to do something, you are not getting it done.  You are just trying to get it done, not getting it done.   Can you see this is seen as failure, especially to a goal or task orientated person?   Because the goal is not completed quickly, efficiently, or to certain expectations it is not a success, it is a failure.  If you are good at something it should come easily, quickly, and with little effort, right?  Think of those child prodigies who can play Beethoven at age 4.

But as I studied God’s word, I realized effort, in of itself, is not failure.  Many times God’s people need to put out effort to accomplish the right thing.  This doesn’t mean they are not saved or corrupt.  It is simply some things take time, energy, and concentration.  This is effort.  Time, energy and concentration!  There are many people who are not gifted, who learn to play the piano, even Beethoven, with some effort.

Then it hit me.  Like a wave of relief the thought came to me during worship one morning.  Even things I am good at, things I enjoy, take effort.  I just don’t notice it the same because I am enjoying the process.  When you are task oriented, like me, you can easily forget the journey is just as much a part of life as the goal completed.

Would you rather be doing nothing, sitting back and just looking over the past accomplishments, or would you rather be actively living?

Red Eye, Issues and Answers.

There it is, even when you use red eye reduction, red eye. So, WHY!! Why can't you get rid of it?? Well, first let's explain what it is and when it happens. When your flash is too close to the lens on your camera (unless you have an external flash, this means your camera) and you take pictures in low light, or even not so low light, the flash passes into the eye and reflects off the fundus at the back of the eyeball and back out the pupil. The pupil can't dilate fast enough with a flash. That is why the darker the room, the more likely you will get red eye. The more light, the more the pupil is all ready dilated and thus the bounce of the flash off the fundus is minimized.

So solution number one. Get an external flash so you can bounce the light, diffuse the light, or increase the distance between the flash and the lens. For the rest of you --- Photoshop or other image editing software.

Fixing red eye with photo software can be as simple as clicking the "fix red eye button" in the program. And I find this to work quite well in Photoshop. I rarely have to manually fix red eye, but if you do here's how...

Orange Cheese

A very versatile cheese, a good vegan substitute for cheddar cheese.

1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup raw cashews
2 tsp sea salt
1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes
2 Tbsp lemon juice, fresh is best
1/4 tsp garlic powder (or 1 small clove)
1 tsp onion powder
3 Tbsp Vegetarian Jel
1/2 cup roasted red peppers (or chopped pimento)
1/4 cup tomatoes with chilies (like Rotelle), optional!
1/4 cup canola oil, optional but very creamy.

Dissolve Jel in boiling water (unless using oats or corn starch, see Variation).  Rinse cashews well, place in blender and cover with water (out of the 1 1/2cups).  Blend on high until smooth.  Add remaining ingredients, including remaining water, and blend until very smooth.  Pour into a mold and let set several hours.

Variation:  Omit Jel and use ¼ cup oats or cornstarch.  Rinse cashews well, place in blender and cover with water.  Blend on high until smooth.  Add remaining ingredients and blend until very smooth. Cook in a saucepan until thick and bubbly.  Use over pasta, etc.  Good for dipping (may need to add water) or spreading.  For lasagna skip the cooking step and pour on before baking.
