Defining & Finding Peace
What is the peace that passeth understanding? What about my peace I give unto you? We are told this is not the peace the world gives. So what is the difference between the world’s peace and Christ’s? What is this peace like?
Well first let’s get a picture of what are some things we are told we will feel, or go through as Christians:
- Struggle, war, effort, -- “The arduous struggle for conquest over self, for holiness and heaven, is a lifelong struggle. There is NO release in this war; the effort must be continuous and persevering. Christian integrity must be south with resistless energy and maintained with a resolute fixedness of purpose.” {PM 76} “The Christian life is a life of conflict, or self-denial and conquest.” {OHC 25}
- A mix of sorrow and joy: “The Christian's life is a strangely mingled scene of sorrows and joys, disappointments and hopes, fears and confidence. There will be much dissatisfaction with self, as he views his own heart so deeply stirred, surged with passion that seems to bear all before it, and then follows remorse and sorrow and repentance, followed by peace and deep hidden joys, because he knows, as his faith grasps the promises that are revealed in God's Word, that he has the forgiving love of a longsuffering Saviour.”{TDG 62}
So, Christ definition of peace must include the above struggles, trials, and emotions because there is no contradictions in the Bible. OR the peace must come and go, like an emotion or event, such as happiness. Not that this means up and downs like a manic depressive person. No, like a normal life, birth of a new baby, death of a parent. Nothing wrong with a variety of emotions throughout our lives. Well, let’s dig into this peace God is offering us.
There are many definitions of peace. Hold your peace, meaning to not say anything. Go in peace, meaning I hold nothing against you. External peace, getting along, no war, no trials, etc. Counterfeit peace, the Devil’s form. And internal peace from God. We will mostly focus on God’s inner peace in this booklet, but first let’s compare them.
External peace and counterfeit peace I have group together because ironically Satan lies to us using truth. He claims God promises us peace and it is not happening so God is lying. BUT, big but, Satan is using the verses about external peace that God promises for us in heaven and on the new earth. Those promises are yet to be fulfilled. External peace and counterfeit peace:
- Happiness
- Joy
- No worries, carefree
- No trials
- No burdens
- Taking it easy
- External, everyone getting along
Summary of God’s inner peace:
- Happiness returns after brief sorrow
- Joy is deep inside you
- No worries, our cares are real but given to God to take care of.
- Trials come, God empowers you through
- Burdens must be born, but Christ is yoked with you
- Work for the night is coming
- Internal, even when others don’t get along
We can have inner peace, here and now. It is obtainable by all who will yield themselves to the Creator and His mighty power to recreate your life.
