Busy Minds

How important is it to keep a busy mind? If you said very important, you’d be right. A restless, unoccupied mind can cause a lot of problems. We can avoid many dangerous thoughts by keeping our minds busy. “Satan knows that if he can get men and women absorbed in trifling details, greater questions will be left unheeded. He will furnish plenty of material for the attention of those who are willing to think upon trifling, unimportant subjects. The minds of the Pharisees were absorbed with questions of no moment. They passed by the precious truths of God’s word to discuss the traditionally lore handed down from generation to generation, which in no way concerned their salvation. And so today, while precious moments are passing into eternity, the great questions of salvation are overlooked for some idle tale.” RH, August 13, 1901 par. 3

Using our moments wisely is good stewardship. “Deep thought, earnest purpose, steadfast integrity, are essential. There must be no idleness. Life is a sacred trust; and every moment should be wisely improved.” YI, Feb 19, 1903.

So, you are standing in line waiting to be served, or at church 5 minutes early. What do you do? We don’t want to pack in just one more thing, or we’d be late, so what do you do? Have a ‘Think To Do List.’ What? A ‘Think To Do List,’ things you would like to think about, but often don’t have the time. This is a great list for re-directing negative thoughts as well. Perhaps it is reciting old hymns or memory verses to keep them fresh.

Here is a list I made for myself, maybe it will give you a few ideas, Please let us know your ideas, we’d love to hear from you:

* Self-examination - Why am I thinking vain or poor thoughts? Am I upset with someone? Is it a new temptation from Satan or an old wound? Am I harboring ill feelings/thoughts from the past and I need to deal with it, or is this a new temptation I can ‘ignore’ by giving it over to God.
* Recite a memory verse - Keep verse’s I’ve all ready learnt fresh or learn a new one. Ask my son to recite one to me, and keep his mind busy too!
* Sing a hymn - out loud or in my mind. We memorize hymns for family worship and this is a good way to keep them fresh.
* Pray - ask the Lord to direct my feet, praise Him, etc.
* Write a list of Thanks - imaginary or on paper
* Is there something I’d like to learn more about?
* Is there something I should be considering, praying, and mulling over? Perhaps a decision that needs to be made at home or church.
* Ask my son (if he is with me) what he is thankful for.
* Is there someone close by that I can reach out to?
* Is there someone I should be expressing thanks to? Perhaps I should write a note of encouragement to someone (I always keep note paper in my purse and thinking of you postcards.)
* How can I reach a certain person/group with the 3 Angel’s Message or touch them with the gospel?
* Write out little articles (like this one, I often come up with the articles for the newsletters while riding in the car, waiting for Sabbath School to start, etc.)

Sometimes, though, we can be too busy with all our projects and things to do that we don’t let the Holy Spirit lead. So before using any of the items on the list above, pray for the Lord to direct you.

Ever keep in mind, “The eternal interests of the soul have been fearfully neglected for unimportant affairs. The mind is kept busy, just as Satan designs it shall be, with selfish interests and nothing of any consequence, and time may be passing into eternity without a fitting up for heaven at all.” That I May Know Him p. 321.

Using a Polarizer

It's a beautiful sunny day with light blue skies and white fluffy clouds, how to you get the sky darker without changing the exposure. Or maybe it is a hazy day and you are looking over a vast canyon, how to you cut down the hazy. How about a glassy lake with reflections on it, but you want to take a picture of the colorful rocks on the bottom. How do you do all these photos? ...

Music & the Mind

Music. The wonder of sound with melody, harmony, and rhythm. It brings rest to the weary, energy to the tired, and enjoyment to all. So what does music have to do with the mind? Most of our body functions originate in the mind, from walking to hormone production, the brain is the control center.

The mind interprets and is affected by music based on several different factors such as: what music you have been exposed to and how much you’ve been exposed to it. The advanced musician actually ‘hears’ more harmony than the unlearned ear. Different styles of music affect individuals differently, but there are some commonalities that remain for us all.

Fast tempo’s (for the sake of simplicity I am using this term loosely) can raise the heart rate, raise blood pressure, and impart energy (by how the mind reacts to the music being played or sung). Even cognitive function is increased with some of the more energetic forms of music. Slow songs lower the heart rate and blood pressure, while relaxing us. But it is not tempo alone that affects us.

Harmonies and melodies activate the temporal lobes and can help brain damaged or brain diseased persons perform daily tasks which they could not perform without music. Music can also increase endorphin levels, those happy hormones, decreasing the need for pain medication. It can regulate many of the different stress hormones and it can boost the immune system.

It is very clear that music has a direct physiological and psychological effect on our minds. So, what is the best music for the mind? It depends. What kind of answer is that? The best one. Let me explain.
